Those of you who follow me on social media know I like wine. Actually, I love wine. Give me a glass on Pinot Noir and I’m a happy gay. Even though I like to enjoy a glass of wine after dinner while watching Golden Girls reruns or The Devil Wears Prada for the hundredth time, it’s always more fun to share a bottle with friends.
Now, I’m not sure if you know this, but when you go out to a restaurant or a bar, the price you pay for just 1 glass of wine is equivalent to the cost of the entire bottle, 4 glasses worth. It’s even greater if you order hard liquor. Restaurants make a fortune on wine and spirits. I try to never order wine anymore at a restaurant. I can’t comprehend paying $12 (plus tax and tip) for one glass of wine, when I can buy an entire bottle for the same price and share it with friends or drink it by myself if I’m so inclined.
The next time you want to go out for dinner with a group of your closest BFFs, invite them over to your place either before or after dinner for some wine. Explain to them that it makes more sense than ordering drinks with dinner. You’ll probably get laughed at the first time you suggest this, but don’t let them deter you from your ultimate goal. If they insist on having wine with dinner, let them order wine, but you need to refrain – and ask for separate checks. Watch their faces when the checks arrive and your check is $20, while theirs is upwards of $40, if not more if they decide to order multiple cocktails. You’ll get the last laugh and then eventually your friends will catch on and gladly accept your invitation.
